Proactive risk management: limiting client damage and loss events

Applying Risk Consulting principles and loss prevention strategies to existing facilities, as well to major construction projects, services motor and heavy goods transportation can reduce the likelihood of loss, the extent of damage resulting from the loss related to property and business interruption. Experts’ tip

Take active measures to prevent damage from heavy rain

Heavy rain can flood entire streets or even parts of cities in a very short period of time. For example, according to the German Meteorological Service, in May of this year more than 150 litres of rain fell per square metre, in some cases within 12 hours - throughout Germany it rained an average of 770 litres per square metre for an entire year (GDV 2018).The experts at HDI Risk Consulting (HRC) therefore recommend actively limiting potential damage by taking the following measures:

  • Ensuring sufficient roof and location drainage in addition to cleaning and servicing twice a year wherever possible
  • Sealing doors, windows, cellar shafts and areas where there are supply and drain lines
  • Preventing the sewage system from overflowing by inserting non-return flaps
  • Moving critical equipment such as IT, heating and power supply systems to elevated locations
  • Developing and updating operational contingency plans on a regular basis
